Lot 174:
Description
An early 20th-century mechanical desk or travel clock retailed by Mappin and Webb Ltd. The circular white dial is set with black Roman numeral hour markers and a rail track minute ring with diamond markers at the quarters. The dial is inscribed MAPPIN & WEBB LTD LONDON above the centre and 8 DAYS below, with SWISS MADE at the six o’clock position. It features a black spade-shaped hour hand and a baton minute hand. The clock is mounted in a square frame covered in brown textured leather. A large fluted brass winding and setting crown is located at the base of the movement. The reverse is finished with a copper-coloured fabric backing. The remnants of a hinge at the top edge suggest this was originally part of a folding leather-cased travel set.
Condition report:
The item is in worn and distressed condition. The outer folding case is missing, leaving a torn hinge at the top. The leather on the front shows significant age-related wear, scuffing, and loss of surface. The dial has several visible hairline cracks radiating from the centre. There is verdigris and oxidation on the metal components on the reverse. The mechanical movement is untested and its functional condition cannot be guaranteed.
