Description
This antique horse measuring walking cane is a dual-purpose equestrian tool designed for gauging the height of a horse at the withers. The shaft and crook handle are constructed from wood that has been stained and shaped to simulate the natural nodes and appearance of bamboo. The cane houses a concealed telescopic metal measuring rod that slides out from the top of the shaft. This rod is fitted with a hinged, fold-out horizontal arm at its upper end. One face of the metal rod features an incised imperial scale graduated in inches from 1 to 12. The reverse face features a metric scale graduated in centimetres, with visible markings from 100 to 135. A metal ferrule is fitted to the base of the wooden shaft.
Condition report:
The cane is in good functional condition. The wooden exterior shows surface wear consistent with age and use, including scuffs, scratches, and localized loss of finish, particularly on the handle and the lower shaft. The internal metal measuring mechanism shows minor surface tarnish and oxidation but remains complete and operational.
