Description
An original mid-20th-century industrial metal identification sign from an overhead crane or hoist, manufactured by the Aabacas Engineering Company Ltd. of Birkenhead. The sign consists of a large rectangular sheet steel plate with an enamelled or painted cream-white background. The upper section features the manufacturer name AABACAS in large black block capitals. The lower section includes the abbreviations SWL (Safe Working Load) and TON. A smaller, square metal plate is centrally mounted over the main sign, bearing the numeral 5 to denote the specific lifting capacity. Affixed directly below this central plate is a small, dark rectangular tag with the alphanumeric code C . 19 in white. The sign is constructed for heavy-duty industrial use and includes four pre-drilled corner mounting holes.
Condition report:
The item is in as-found industrial condition. It exhibits a heavy authentic patina with significant surface wear, including scratches, abrasions, and overall yellowing and staining of the background finish. Visible surface oxidation and paint loss are present, particularly around the perimeter edges and the mounting holes.
