Lot 50:
Description
A late Victorian cast brass table clock featuring an ornate openwork frame in the Aesthetic Movement style. The square-format frame is designed with a rustic border resembling crossed twigs or bamboo, which encloses a field of lattice-work entwined with climbing rose vines and blossoms. The central circular dial is ivory-coloured with Arabic numerals and is set within a drum-shaped movement housing. The frame is marked on the upper reverse horizontal bar with the British Registered Design number Rd No 158229, dating the design to approximately 1890. The dial is marked Manufactured by the Waterbury Clock Co U.S.A. below the six o’clock position. The reverse movement housing is further stamped Waterbury Clock Co. Waterbury Conn USA along with patent information. The clock is supported by a hinged scroll-style stand and retains its integrated winding key.
Width: Approximately 15 – 18 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in as-found condition. The gilded finish exhibits age-related wear, tarnishing, and some loss, revealing the darker brass beneath. There is a significant accumulation of dust and debris within the intricate openwork casting. The dial shows foxing and general discoloration. Traces of a pinkish residue are visible on the interior of the frame. The hands and winding mechanism appear intact; however, the movement is untested for timekeeping accuracy.
