Description
This British military portable electric lantern is identified as a Lamp Electric No. 1, Reference No. WB.1501. The unit features a metal body with a drab brown painted finish. The design includes a rectangular battery housing with a top-mounted hexagonal nut and a wire swing handle. The front of the lantern is equipped with a circular rotating shutter mechanism, operated by a central knurled metal knob. This shutter contains a semi-circular aperture intended for controlling light emission, often utilised for signalling or light discipline in blackout conditions. An original paper tag is attached, printed with the text W2. WB.1501 and Lamps Electric No. 1. The tag displays the G.R. monogram beneath a crown, identifying it as British government property from the reign of King George VI. Similar examples are documented as bicycle lamps used by the British Army during the mid-20th century.
