Lot 79:
Description
A 19th-century British Harrison’s Improved brass rocker-style sovereign balance used for the verification of gold coinage. The instrument is constructed from cast brass and consists of a counterweighted arm designed to pivot on a small integral stand. The arm features two circular recessed rests with central slits, sized for the standard diameters of full and half-sovereign coins. The larger coin rest is stamped with the words SOVEREIGN and WARRANTED. The smaller rest is stamped 1/2 SOVEREIGN and WARRANTED. A small crown symbol is stamped into the flat upper surface of the counterweight. The balance is housed in its original red pasteboard box which retains a green printed paper label reading HARRISON’S IMPROVED SOVEREIGN BALANCE and WARRANTED CORRECT.
Approximate length of balance: 110 mm.
Condition report:
The brass balance is in good antique condition, showing a consistent aged patina and maintaining a sound mechanical pivoting action. The original box exhibits significant age-related wear, including loss and scuffing to the red paper covering, particularly at the edges and corners. The paper label is largely legible but shows fading and some staining.
