Description
John Murray Wine and Spirit Merchant advertising flagon from the Swan Arcade, Bradford. This late 19th or early 20th-century vessel is of two-tone salt-glazed stoneware construction, featuring a bulbous shoulder above a tapered cylindrical body. The upper section is finished in a tan glaze, while the lower portion displays a buff-coloured finish. A decorative milled rope-twist band is situated just below the shoulder. The vessel is impressed with a capacity mark of 2 and identifying text for the merchant: JOHN MURRAY, WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANT, SWAN ARCADE, BRADFORD. A further impressed number 930 is located to the side of the main inscription. The flagon is fitted with a cork stopper.
Condition report:
The flagon is in good overall condition, displaying characteristics typical of its age and industrial manufacture. These include kiln marks, minor surface pitting, and light staining to the lower section. No significant cracks or large chips are visible. The cork stopper is present.
