Description
A Royal Doulton earthenware character jug titled Sancho Panza, model number D6456. This large-sized jug depicts the character Sancho Panza from Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. The figure is rendered with a grey moustache and beard, wearing a broad black hat and a white-collared shirt. The handle is uniquely modelled in the form of a donkey’s head. The piece is decorated with hand-painted underglaze in a realistic colour palette of flesh tones, greys, and black. The base is clearly marked with the Royal Doulton factory stamp, including the lion and crown logo, Sancho Panza, model number D 6456, COPR 1956, DOULTON & CO LIMITED, and registration numbers 881510, 35706, 7581, and 332/56. The name Sancho Panza is embossed in relief around the back of the base.
Height: approximately 17 cm.
Condition report:
The jug is in very good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration. The glaze remains bright with minimal crazing observed.
