Lot 62:
Description
A pair of vintage silver gelatin prints depicting the Parian marble sculpture Echo by the British sculptor Edward William Wyon (1811-1885). The monochrome images capture the seated neoclassical figure from two distinct angles, one in near profile and the other in a three-quarter view, both set against a dark, tonal background. Each print is inscribed with the title Echo in a lower corner, with additional partially legible markings beneath. The photographs are mounted in matching black wooden frames featuring decorative inner bead mouldings and glass glazing. The reverse of the frames reveals aged and brittle brown paper backings with wire hanging fixtures.
Dimensions: 8 inches by 11 inches (each frame).
Condition report:
The silver gelatin prints exhibit significant silver mirroring and oxidation, especially around the edges, resulting in a characteristic blueish-silver iridescent halo. There is evidence of surface spotting and fading across both images. The black wooden frames show scuffing, surface wear, and minor losses to the finish consistent with age. The paper backings on the reverse are aged, torn, and brittle.
