Lot 63:
Description
This lot comprises two antique utilitarian storage items. The first is a small wooden barrel or costrel of traditional oak stave construction, secured by four iron bands. Known as a field ambulance water or rum cask, it features a central metal bung with a decorative star-shaped finial and sits upon a bespoke wooden trestle stand. The second item is a tall, cylindrical salt-glazed stoneware jar produced by Bourne Denby. The vessel features a tapered neck leading to a rounded, flared rim. An impressed mark at the base reads VITREOUS BOURNE DENBY ENGLAND.
Barrel length: 14 inches
Barrel height: 12 inches
Stoneware jar height: 11 inches.
Condition report:
The oak barrel shows signs of age-related drying and surface wear to the staves. The iron hoops exhibit significant oxidation and surface rust throughout. The wooden stand remains structurally sound but shows surface scuffing and wear. The stoneware jar is in good antique condition with typical surface staining and minor glaze pitting consistent with the salt-glazing process. No chips or cracks are visible.
