Lot 66:
Description
This lot comprises two Chinese decorative objects: a cased board game and a folding parasol. The Weiqi (Go) set is housed in a rectangular wooden box with a red-tinted covering and brass hardware. The lid is decorated with gilt-effect motifs including a central Double Happiness symbol (囍), a dragon, a phoenix, and foliate corner patterns. The interior of the box and two internal octagonal containers are lined with printed paper. The lid lining features woodcut-style illustrations of figures and columns of Chinese characters identifying the text as Bai Jia Xing (Hundred Family Surnames). The internal containers are lined with paper featuring an astrological chart of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The set contains a quantity of black and white lenticular glass stones. The second item is a traditional parasol featuring a bamboo frame and ribs with a white string-bound hub. The canopy, constructed of paper or treated silk, is hand-painted with figures in a landscape and vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy.
Box length: 24 cm
Parasol length (folded): 57 cm.
Condition report:
The Weiqi game set is in fair to poor condition. The outer red covering of the box has significant surface loss and chipping, particularly to the lid, exposing the white substrate. The brass latch and hinges show oxidation. The interior paper lining is toned with some minor staining. The glass stones appear generally intact. The parasol is in generally good condition with expected creasing to the canopy from folding and age. The bamboo structure is stable and the painted decoration remains clear.
