Description

A professional-grade liquid-filled lensatic sighting compass manufactured in West Germany by Wilkie. The instrument is housed in a square black synthetic resin body and features a folding lid with a circular glass window and an integrated metal sighting wire. A folding magnifying lens is mounted above the bezel for reading the increments. A metal thumb ring is attached to the hinge for steadying the device during use. The liquid-filled yellow dial features a red magnetic needle and an integrated bubble spirit level. The external rotating bezel is graduated 0 to 360 degrees in 2-degree increments, while the inner dial is marked with a military 6400-mil scale. The underside features an affixed metal conversion plate with bilingual text in German and English, providing tables for angle, width, and distance ratios, alongside map scale conversion data. The dial is marked WILKIE and MADE IN WEST GERMANY. The compass is accompanied by its original black stitched leather belt pouch with a press-stud closure and a printed reference card.

Width: 2.25 inches.

Condition report:

The instrument is in good cosmetic condition. The sighting wire and magnifying lens are intact. There is a large air bubble present within the liquid-filled capsule, which is a common occurrence in vintage compasses due to age-related seal contraction. The leather pouch shows minor signs of surface wear and scuffing consistent with field use.
