Lot 92:
Description
This lot comprises a vintage portable pen-style pocket microscope manufactured by Ward. The main barrel is constructed from a black composition material, likely bakelite or a similar early plastic, featuring chrome-plated metal components including the objective housing and sliding adjustment pin. The barrel is clearly marked with the manufacturer name Ward in a stylised script. Adjacent to the adjustment slot is a magnification scale with markings for 40x, 50x, and 60x. The design incorporates a slanted objective end intended to capture ambient light for specimen illumination, with a flared eyepiece located at the base. The instrument is accompanied by its original dark grey soft-shell pouch which features a metal snap-frame closure.
Length: approximately 140mm.
Condition report:
The microscope is in fair to good vintage condition with visible surface scuffing and minor wear to the chrome-plated elements. The sliding adjustment mechanism appears functional. The lenses are present and appear intact, though optical performance has not been professionally verified. The accompanying pouch is in poor condition, exhibiting significant surface degradation, cracking, and loss of the outer material layer, although the metal closure remains functional.
