Lot 157:
Description
A wall-hanging crucifix featuring a wooden cross and a cast metal corpus. The cross is constructed from wood with a medium-brown stain, featuring a mitered chevron joint at the centre. The corpus, representing the figure of Christ, is cast from regule (white metal alloy) with a bronze-effect patination. Christ is depicted wearing a crown of thorns and a draped loincloth, secured to the cross by metal nails at the hands and feet. A metal titulus in the form of a scroll is mounted at the top of the vertical beam, inscribed with the letters INRI (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum). The reverse of the cross features a circular metal hanging loop and a fragmentary paper label with illegible text.
Height: 45.5 cm
Width: 30.5 cm.
Condition report:
The item shows age-related wear throughout. The wooden cross exhibits minor surface scuffs and small indentations. The metal corpus shows rubbing and loss to the bronze-effect patination on high-relief areas, revealing the lighter base metal beneath. There are traces of oxidation around the mounting nails. The paper label on the reverse is significantly damaged and incomplete.
