Description

A folding book stand, traditionally known as a rehal, crafted from two interlocking panels of dark-toned hardwood. The stand features elaborate hand-carved pierced openwork and relief decoration throughout. The upper sections are decorated with central stylized flower heads enclosed in circular borders, surrounded by scrolling foliate and vine-leaf motifs. The lower supports continue the theme with scrolling vine patterns. The two sections are joined by a central interlocking wooden hinge, allowing the piece to fold flat or be positioned in an X-configuration to support a book. This style of craftsmanship is traditionally associated with the Indian subcontinent and used for supporting religious texts. The wood exhibits a dense grain consistent with sheesham or a similar hardwood species.

Folded: 40 cm height x 20 cm width

Open: 38 cm span x 24 cm height.

Condition report:

The item is in good vintage condition with surface wear consistent with age and use. There are minor scuffs to the edges and natural patination to the wood surfaces. No structural breaks, major losses, or repairs are visible.
