Description

This lot comprises a collection of early 20th-century printed cigarette silks, originally issued as tobacco premiums. The assortment covers several themes, including militaria, vexillology, and religious iconography. Visible military silks include regimental colours and crests for The Durham Light Infantry and The Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 23rd Foot. Vexillological examples include the Union Jack, the flag of Portugal, and a French pilot flag. One oval silk depicts the Virgin Mary. These items were popular collectibles produced by tobacco firms such as Godfrey Phillips Ltd and Kensitas during the period circa 1910-1930. The silks are contained within a rectangular, dark-stained wooden box featuring dovetailed joints and metal hinges.

Box length: approximately 20 cm – 23 cm.

Condition report:

The silks are in varied condition, with many displaying characteristic fraying to the unhemmed edges. There are instances of light creasing, minor staining, and age-related toning, though the printed colours remain vibrant. The wooden box exhibits signs of age and wear, including surface scratches, small pits, and some staining.
