Description

A Chinese hand-carved sculpture in a dark hardwood, possibly rosewood, depicting a reclining water buffalo with two young cowherds climbing on its back. The animal hide is decorated with finely incised hairwork, and the eyes and teeth are inset with a white material, likely bone or a composite. The two figures are depicted in traditional robes with expressive facial features. The sculpture rests upon a separate, intricately carved openwork base featuring stylised foliate and rockwork designs. This piece is characteristic of carvings produced in the late 19th or early 20th century. No reign marks or signatures are visible on the figure or the stand.

Length: approximately 38 cm (15 inches).

Condition report:

The sculpture and stand are in good overall condition. There is minor surface wear and accumulated dust consistent with age. One horn shows a small natural fissure or join line common in larger wood carvings. The openwork stand remains intact without significant breaks or evidence of repair.
