Description

A large Chinese export porcelain punch bowl decorated in the Rose Medallion pattern using overglaze famille rose enamels and gilding. The decoration consists of four main cartouches on both the interior and exterior, alternating between domestic courtyard scenes with figures and nature scenes featuring birds, butterflies, and peonies. These panels are separated by borders of scrolling foliage, flowers, and fruit set against a gilded ground. The interior centre features a circular medallion depicting birds among flowers. The base features a six-character mark in iron-red enamel arranged in two vertical columns: 義謙堂 龍年製 (Yiqian Tang Longnian Zhi), which translates to Made in the Dragon Year for the Yiqian Hall. This studio mark is associated with the late Qing dynasty or early Republic period. A small auxiliary cross mark is present to the left of the main inscription.

Diameter: 30.5 cm

Height: 14.5 cm.

Condition report:

The bowl is in good overall condition consistent with age. The enamel decoration remains vibrant and well-preserved. There is visible rubbing and wear to the gilding along the top rim. The unglazed foot ring shows typical surface wear and minor discolouration from use. No cracks, chips, or signs of professional restoration are visible.
