Description
This lot consists of two commemorative medallions of historical interest. The first is a cast dark-toned base metal British propaganda copy of the satirical Sinking of the Lusitania medal by Karl Goetz. The obverse features the RMS Lusitania sinking by the stern, with the legends KEINE BANN WARE and DER GROSSDAMPFER LUSITANIA DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES TAUCHBOOT VERSENKT 5 MAY 1915. The reverse depicts a line of passengers at a Cunard Line ticket booth being served by a skeleton, beneath the legend GESCHAFT UBER ALLES, with the artist initials KG in the exergue. The second item is a bronze athletic award medal for the Victoria University. The obverse bears a heraldic shield with the border inscribed MANCHESTER · LIVERPOOL · LEEDS and the motto OLIM ARMIS NUNC STUDIIS on a ribbon. The reverse is border-inscribed INTER – UNIVERSITY SPORTS and features a centre engraving reading 1923 / 440 YARDS 2ND.

Condition report:
Both medals exhibit age-related wear. The Lusitania medal shows light surface oxidation and a typical cast texture. The university medal displays natural toning, minor surface marks, and light edge knocks. Both are in very fine condition.
