Description

A Dartmouth Pottery Widecombe Fair earthenware jug, manufactured in Devon, England. The jug is of bulbous form featuring a pinched spout and an applied handle with a stylised leaf terminal at the upper join. It is finished in a rich, dark treacle brown glaze. The body is decorated with cream-coloured relief-moulded scenes depicting characters from the famous Devon folk song, Widecombe Fair, showing the men riding the grey mare. The shoulder of the jug bears the embossed inscription Widecombe Fair in matching cream relief. The base features an impressed circular backstamp. The literal transcription around the outer edge of the stamp shows Dartmouth Pottery at the top and Made in England at the bottom, with the word Devon located in the centre of the mark.

Height: approximately 11 cm
Width: approximately 9 cm.

Condition report:

The jug is in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The glaze maintains a high gloss with some minor surface wear and light internal crazing consistent with earthenware of this period.
