Lot 50:
Description
A vintage cheese trier, also known as a cheese sampler, of traditional Sheffield manufacture. This tool is designed for extracting core samples from wheels of cheese for inspection and grading. It features a polished steel, trough-shaped blade that tapers to a pointed tip. The blade is mounted to a T-bar handle constructed with a central section of polished light-coloured natural horn showing characteristic grain, finished with dark-coloured horn or composition end caps. The item is provided with a custom-fit brown leather sheath, which includes a stitched retaining strap and a belt loop on the reverse. The tang of the tool is stamped on one side with the curved text MADE IN over SHEFFIELD and ENGLAND. The reverse side of the tang is stamped with the numeral 2 and an oval mark containing the characters S & Cº with an indistinct emblem above.
Overall length: 8 inches
Blade length: 5.5 inches.
Condition report:
The tool is in good vintage condition. The steel blade retains a bright finish with light surface scratches and minor scattered spots of oxidation and pitting, particularly near the bolster. The horn handle is intact and well-polished with no visible cracks or chips. The leather sheath shows signs of age and use, including superficial scuffing and darkening of the leather, but remains supple with all stitching intact.
