Description
A group of eleven antique gaming balls, likely intended for games such as carpet bowls, marbles, or primitive lawn games. The collection includes pieces made from different natural and manufactured materials. Several examples appear to be hand-finished or turned clay, often referred to as commoneys or carpet balls in an antique context. Other pieces are made of turned natural stone, including one example with a grey speckled, granite-like appearance. One larger ball exhibits a distinct orange-toned mineral inclusion or surface mark. These items are typical of traditional British and European domestic gaming pieces from the Victorian through to the early 20th century.
Diameter: 25mm to 63mm (1 inch to 2.5 inches).
