Lot 56:
Description
A large circular Chinese export porcelain punch bowl featuring overglaze enamel decoration in the Famille Rose palette, executed in the Cantonese Rose Medallion style. The decoration consists of alternating trapezoidal panels; one set depicts courtly figurative scenes within architectural and pavilion settings, while the opposing set displays naturalistic arrangements of flowers, birds, and butterflies. The panels are framed by a green-ground scroll border embellished with floral and butterfly motifs, which is repeated at the rim. The interior well contains four similar panels surrounding a central gilded medallion with a bird and floral motif. The exterior body continues the alternating panel design with significant use of gilding on the rim and borders. The underside of the bowl bears a six-character mark in iron-red enamel arranged in two vertical columns. The mark reads Zai Qian Tang… Nian Zhi, identifying it as a hall mark for the Zaiqian Hall, dating to the late Qing Dynasty. A small, separate iron-red x mark is present near the foot rim. The bowl is accompanied by a custom-fitted, dark-stained carved wood stand featuring a traditional scrolled design.
Bowl Diameter: 35.5 cm (14 inches)
Stand Diameter: 17.5 cm (7 inches).
Condition report:
The porcelain bowl is in good overall condition. There is minor expected wear to the gilding on the rim and light surface scratches consistent with age and domestic use. The foot rim shows shelf wear and typical darkening. No significant chips, hairline cracks, or signs of restoration are visible. The wooden stand shows minor surface wear and a small central hole from the manufacturing process.
