Description
A traditional Japanese Yamagata kokeshi doll, hand-turned and painted by the artisan Yoshio. The wooden figure is composed of a large, rounded head and a cylindrical body. The head features red radiating lines known as mizuhiki and a hand-painted face with narrow eyes, arched eyebrows, and a small mouth in black and red pigments. The body is decorated with stylized floral motifs, characteristic of the Yamagata style, in red and green pigments, bordered by horizontal red bands at the shoulder and base. The underside of the base bears a hand-painted signature in black ink, with the right column indicating Yamagata and the left column identifying the maker as Yoshio.
Height: 26 cm.
Condition report:
The doll is in overall excellent vintage condition with minor surface wear and small scuffs consistent with age. There is slight fading of the red pigment on the crown of the head and a small natural indentation at the edge of the base. No structural cracks or significant losses to the paintwork are present.
