Description
A Chinese carved red cinnabar lacquer vase, featuring high relief carving of scrolling floral and foliate motifs, including peonies, set against a geometric diaper ground. The vase is constructed with a metal core and a bright blue enamel interior and base. The collection includes a circular brass-toned trinket box with a floral micromosaic lid featuring multi-coloured blooms on a white ground and embossed foliate sides. A white metal filigree pill box features intricate granulation and is set with three small cabochons in white, blue, and red. A kidney-shaped box is veneered with mother-of-pearl fragments and a single large piece of polished shell showing pink iridescence. Also present is a cobalt blue glass or stone egg with incised and gilded bird and foliate motifs, and an assortment of decorative thimbles. These thimbles include cloisonne examples with floral and animal designs, one featuring a transfer-printed owl, and others with enamel patterns.
Vase height: approximately 18 cm.
Condition report:
The cinnabar lacquer vase is in good overall condition with no visible losses to the carved surface. The micromosaic on the trinket box lid appears complete. The mother-of-pearl box and the cobalt blue egg show no obvious chips or cracks. Minor tarnishing is present on the metal surfaces of the thimbles and boxes, consistent with age and use.
