Description
A pair of vintage hand-carved wooden confectionery moulds, traditionally known as kashigata, used for creating intricate sweets. The moulds are crafted from a fine-grained hardwood, featuring deep intaglio-carved chambers with a variety of traditional motifs. The larger mould contains six chambers including a bird, chrysanthemum flower, rooster, acorn, layered leaf, and pomegranate. The smaller mould features five chambers depicting a fan or shell shape, a leaf, plum blossom, pineapple, and a floral cluster with leaves. The base of the larger mould bears a rectangular red ink maker’s stamp, although the characters are faded and illegible.
Larger mould: 28 cm long x 4.5 cm wide
Smaller mould: 23 cm long x 3.8 cm wide.
Condition report:
The moulds are in good used condition with crisp carving detail. There is minor surface staining and localised discoloration to the wood consistent with age and culinary use. A small area of red ink staining is present on the larger block near the stamp. Both blocks appear structurally sound with no significant warping, chips, or cracks to the carving recesses.
