Description
A late 19th-century sculpture in the Renaissance Revival style, cast in spelter with a remnant bronzed finish. The figure depicts a bearded male in 16th-century attire, including a doublet, hose, fur-collared surcoat, and a flat cap. The subject is portrayed in a standing pose, holding a rectangular object resembling a book or ledger across his front. The sculpture is mounted on a circular, stepped metal base embellished with a cast band of foliate and scrollwork decoration, which is further set upon a polished black circular plinth. The casting features detailed drapery and textures. No maker marks or signatures are visible.
Condition report:
The sculpture shows significant wear to the original bronzed finish, with the grey base metal exposed on high points and flat surfaces. There is prominent green verdigris oxidation in the recessed folds of the clothing and around the base. The surface displays some pitting and a heavy accumulation of dust and grime. The black plinth has minor scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use.
