Description
A cased pair of sterling silver bladed butter knives manufactured by Harrison Brothers and Howson. The blades feature bright-cut engraved decoration depicting foliate and fern motifs. Each blade is struck with a full set of Sheffield hallmarks including the maker mark HW, the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown assay office mark, and the lowercase gothic date letter y for 1916. The ferrules are similarly hallmarked with the crown, lion passant, and date letter. The knives are fitted with smooth cream-coloured composite handles. The set is housed in its original fitted presentation case with a black pebble-grain textured exterior and a purple silk and velvet interior lining.

Condition report:
The silver blades show light surface scratching, age-related tarnishing, and minor pitting consistent with use. The handles are intact and free from visible cracks or heavy staining. The original presentation case shows significant external wear, including scuffing, loss of the textured finish on the corners, and fading. The interior lining is frayed in sections and shows indentations from the knives, and one of the silk stays in the lid is loose.
