Lot 2:
Description
An Art Deco relief-moulded earthenware character jug by Burleigh Ware (Burgess & Leigh), featuring the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The jug is finished in a bright yellow glaze, decorated with a hand-painted scene of a castle and outbuildings set against a sunset sky with orange and green clouds. The handle is intricately formed as the figure of the Pied Piper, dressed in a yellow tunic with red polka dots, green hose, and a black conical hat, standing upon a brown rocky base. The flared rim is decorated with a black and white dashed pattern, and the piece sits on a solid green-glazed foot. The underside features a green printed beehive backstamp for Burleigh Ware, Burgess & Leigh, Burslem, England, and a hand-painted shape or pattern number 492 in black.
Height: 23 cm.
Condition report:
The jug is in excellent condition, with no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of restoration. The hand-painted decoration and glaze are bright and well-preserved. There is minor surface wear and light crazing consistent with age.
