Description

This lot comprises two vintage Royal Automobile Club (RAC) enamel lapel badges, representative of mid-20th-century British motoring history. The first badge is for the Rally of Great Britain, featuring a circular design surmounted by a Tudor-style crown. It is constructed from gilt metal with red, blue, and white vitreous enamel. The central blue disc displays the interlocking RAC monogram, surrounded by a red border inscribed RALLY OF GREAT BRITAIN. Two small loops are present at the base for the attachment of bars or chains. The reverse is stamped with the maker’s mark VAUGHTONS B’HAM. B. The second badge is an RAC and Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) Moped Training Scheme Graduate badge. This multi-coloured shield-shaped badge is crafted from gilt metal with green, blue, and white enamel. The design incorporates scrolls and circles inscribed with MOPED, RAC ACU, AUTO-CYCLE UNION, TRAINING SCHEME, and GRADUATE. The reverse features the maker’s mark B.M. & B. CO. within a rectangular border. Both badges are fitted with functional pin and clasp fastenings.

Condition report:

Both badges are in very good vintage condition. The vitreous enamel remains bright and intact with no visible chips or cracks. There is minor surface wear and light rubbing to the gilt finish on the edges and high points. The reverse of both badges shows characteristic age-related tarnish and minor patination. The fastening pins and clasps are present and in working order.
