Lot 222:
Description
A bronze Greek Raiding Forces qualification badge featuring a circular laurel wreath surrounding a central vertical bar and a horizontal xiphos sword. The central vertical bar bears the Greek inscription Η ΤΑΝ, Η, and ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ, quoting the ancient Spartan warrior motto ‘Either with this or on this’. The badge is constructed from a bronzed metal alloy with a textured finish, showing detailed foliage within the wreath and a ribbed grip to the sword hilt. The piece is fitted with a horizontal pin-back fastener to the reverse for attachment to a uniform. The fastening pin is impressed with a mark reading WAD.
Condition report:
Visible wear to the bronze finish on the high points of the laurel wreath and the sword blade (photo 1). There is light oxidation and patina consistent with age across both the front and reverse surfaces (photos 1 and 2). The pin-back fastener is intact and functional (photo 2).
