Description
A vintage paper and card collection comprising cigarette cards, trade cards, commemorative booklets, and lithographed metal tobacco tins. The lot features a partial series of J.S. Fry and Sons Tricks and Puzzles cards from 1924 and a multi-language military series titled Les Armées Atlantiques and De Atlantische Legers. Further card series include John Player and Sons portraits of British royalty and dogs, Salmon and Gluckstein landmark cards, and Snap Card Products Dotto activity cards. The collection includes adhesive albums for W.D. and H.O. Wills Radio Celebrities and Wild Flowers, a Brooke Bond British Costume album, and commemorative programmes for the 1937 Coronation and the 1935 Silver Jubilee. Advertising items comprise an Ogden’s St. Julien Virginia Blend tin, a J. and F. Bell Three Nuns tin, and a Black Cat Number 9 tin. Individual cards bear printed marks for makers including J.S. Fry and Sons, John Player and Sons, Salmon and Gluckstein Limited, and Snap Card Products Ltd. Tins feature lithographed branding for St. Julien, Three Nuns, Black Cat, and Marlboro. A white plastic shopping bag is printed with the text Edwards Shoes.
Condition report:
The card collection generally shows age-related wear including yellowing, foxing, and corner wear (photo 2, 3, and 5). Several cards are in Moderately Played condition with light creasing and surface dirt (photo 3). The commemorative booklets and albums show wear to the spines and edges with significant yellowing to the covers (photo 1). The metal advertising tins exhibit surface scratches, minor oxidation, and loss to the lithographed finish (photo 1). The collection is housed in a black plastic storage crate.
