Description
An assortment of Japanese and Chinese decorative boxes and exercise balls comprising wood and lacquer items. The collection features a Japanese lacquer jewellery box with hand-painted architectural landscapes depicting pagodas and Mount Fuji on a cream ground. The hinged lid opens to reveal a mirror and a pink felt-lined interior containing three cantilevered lidded compartments and a standing geisha ornament. Included is a hardwood two-compartment tea caddy with a brass escutcheon and a blue and white scroll-patterned paper lining to the lid interior. An oval wood box features intricate pierced foliate fretwork to the lid. A tall wood box is hand-painted with a geisha amongst red peonies, while a smaller wood box depicts a sunset landscape. The set is completed by a pair of metal Baoding exercise balls in a green silk presentation box with a printed sheet titled CHINESE EXERCISE BALLS, and a plain rectangular wood storage box.

Condition report:
The tall painted wood box shows significant surface wear and fading to the geisha motif (photo 1). The lacquer jewellery box exhibits minor paint loss at the edges and the internal mirror shows signs of foxing and silvering loss (photo 4). A hairline crack is present in the pierced fretwork on the left side of the oval wood box lid (photo 2). The interior paper lining of the tea caddy shows age-related discoloration and general surface scuffs are visible across the wooden items (photo 1, 3). The exercise balls and their silk box are in good condition.
