Description
A Victorian Cast Iron figural novelty inkwell modelled as a British police officer in a standing posture. The heavy cast construction features a polychrome painted finish depicting the traditional uniform including a custodian helmet and a long double-breasted greatcoat with silver buttons. The figure is hinged at the waist and opens to reveal a hollow interior fitted with a white glazed ceramic liner intended for holding ink. The reverse displays a belt with a central pouch and the figure stands upon a rustic textured base. No legible marks or labels are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces.

Condition report:
Widespread and heavy paint loss is visible across the front of the greatcoat and the base, exposing the dark metal substrate (photo 1). Chipping and wear to the painted finish are present on the facial features and helmet (photo 1). The hinge mechanism is intact and remains functional (photo 2). The interior ceramic liner appears complete and without visible cracks, though it shows surface soiling (photo 2). General paint wear and oxidation are evident to the reverse of the figure (photo 3).
