Lot 61:
Description
An iron and hardwood manual roller comprising a hand-forged wrought iron frame and a large beveled wooden disc. The iron frame consists of a dual-pronged mount tapering into a single long handle finished with a circular loop for hanging or tethering. The hardwood disc is centrally mounted on a fixed iron axle and features a thickness of approximately 3.8 cm at the centre, tapering towards the outer edges. The wooden surface displays a dark naturally aged patina with visible grain and tool marks. The iron components show a heavily textured, dark oxidised finish consistent with 19th-century utilitarian manufacture. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible.
Length: 47 cm
Diameter: 21.6 cm
Thickness: 3.8 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in well-used antique condition. The iron frame shows extensive surface pitting and oxidation throughout (photo 1). The hardwood disc exhibits several significant radial drying cracks or checks, particularly one extending from the centre to the bottom edge (photo 1). The outer rim of the disc shows multiple abrasions, chips, and historical wear consistent with heavy use (photo 1). The handle remains structurally sound with a slight curve to the iron bar (photo 2).
