Lot 135:
Description
A large folding wood and bone games box featuring extensive marquetry and parquetry inlay. The exterior is decorated with geometric star and diamond motifs in the Syrian style, utilising various wood veneers and light-coloured bone or mother-of-pearl inserts. The edges are finished with a continuous inlaid chevron border. The interior opens to reveal a playing surface of alternating light and dark squares, bordered by decorative bands, and two side compartments lined in red fabric. The set includes two groups of hand-carved wooden chess pieces in a simplified Staunton style; one side in natural boxwood and the other in a black ebonised finish. The knights are characterised by an upright, minimalist carving. The hinges are made of white metal. No maker’s marks or signatures are present on the item.
Width: 40.5 cm
Height: 7.5 cm.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age and use throughout. There are several areas of missing inlay, particularly along the corners and edges of the exterior box (photo 3). Light surface scratching is visible across the playing surface and exterior wood finish. The red fabric lining in the interior compartments shows some fraying and accumulated dust (photo 1). The hand-carved pieces appear complete, though the black ebonised finish shows minor thinning in places. The hinges remain functional and intact (photo 2).
