Description

A large Japanese porcelain charger featuring a scalloped rim and a traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and green accents with gilt highlights. The central medallion depicts a hanakago or flower basket overflowing with botanical sprigs, framed by a wide border divided into radiating panels. These panels alternate between floral sprigs in cartouches and circular vignettes containing stylized figures or creatures against an iron-red ground. The reverse of the plate is decorated with three underglaze blue motifs on the rim resembling stylized scrolls or ribbons. The base is finished with a circular foot rim showing some kiln grit and firing imperfections.
Diameter: 28.5 cm.

Condition report:

The rim shows significant wear and multiple small chips around the scalloped edge (photo 1). There are visible surface scratches and pitting in the glaze, particularly within the central white well (photo 1). The base shows age-related staining and discoloration (photo 2). There is significant wear to the overglaze gilding and enamels across the decorative panels (photo 1).
