Description

A dark-toned Wood desktop inkstand of tiered construction, possibly mahogany or stained pine, featuring three individual hinged compartments with slanting lids. The front of each compartment bears an adhesive printed paper label identifying the intended contents: a left label reading COPYING, a central label reading RED with an arrow symbol pointing to the right, and a right label reading BLACK. The upper section is designed to house three circular glass inkwell liners within recessed circular apertures. Below the inkwell housing is a full-width recessed pen tray finished in black pigment. The backboard features a scalloped top edge and is pierced with two circular holes for wall mounting. The piece is finished with a black-painted base.

Width: 30.5 cm.

Condition report:

The inkstand shows significant signs of age and heavy use. The wood surface displays numerous scuffs, scratches, and areas of finish loss throughout. The three paper labels are worn and stained with visible losses at the edges (photo 1). The interior is missing one of the three original glass liners; two clear glass circular inkwells remain (photo 2). There is visible oxidation to the three metal hinges (photo 3). The black-painted base exhibits significant chipping and wear to the pigment, revealing the wood beneath, particularly along the front edge (photo 1).
