Lot 163:
Description
Two antique infant christening gowns crafted from fine white cotton lawn and featuring extensive needlework. The first gown is a sleeveless under-robe or summer gown, featuring a square-neck bodice with vertical panels of floral embroidery and lace insertion. The skirt is gathered at a high waistline and decorated with three horizontal bands of broderie anglaise eyelet embroidery, finished with a scalloped eyelet hem. The back is secured by a partial placket with two small mother-of-pearl buttons. The second gown is a long-sleeved formal robe featuring a wide, rounded lace bib collar with geometric patterns and a ruffled edge. The long sleeves terminate in lace-trimmed cuffs. The skirt displays horizontal pin-tucking above a wide hem decorated with floral and butterfly motif embroidery, finished with a final tier of floral lace trim. The back opening is secured by a single small white button at the neck and fabric ties.
Length: 79 cm.
Condition report:
Both garments exhibit significant creasing and wrinkling throughout (photo 1). The sleeveless gown shows visible yellowing and light brown staining concentrated along the lower hemline and within the eyelet embroidery sections (photo 2). The long-sleeved gown appears in fair condition, though the fine cotton fabric is thin and displays some loose threads within the delicate lace collar and hem trim (photo 3).
