Lot 188:
Description
A collection of antique salt-glazed stoneware and glass utility vessels, including items for domestic and commercial use. The stoneware components comprise two brown-glazed pouring jars featuring pinched spouts and narrow necks, a cylindrical brown-glazed bottle, and two cream-coloured stoneware crocks. The lot also includes a large off-white stoneware foot warmer of cylindrical form with a screw-top cap. The glass selection features several aqua and dark green glass bottles, including two torpedo-style aerated water bottles and a variety of cylindrical beverage and pharmaceutical vessels. A large aqua glass bottle is embossed with the characters DORSET BREWERY. The items exhibit surface characteristics typical of recovered utility ware, including iridescent surface oxidation and interior residue.
Condition report:
The large white stoneware foot warmer has a significant vertical crack running down the body (photo 1). The brown-glazed stoneware jugs show surface pitting and shelf wear to the bases (photo 3). The cream stoneware crocks exhibit interior staining and crazing (photo 3). Several glass bottles show heavy surface oxidation and staining, known as sick glass, particularly visible on the aqua torpedo bottles (photo 1). Dirt and residue are present across the collection (photo 2).
