Lot 28:
Description
A cast Bronze sculpture modelled as a spherical head depicting the four faces of Buddha, representing the four mental states of joy, anger, sorrow, and serenity. The piece functions as a scholar’s object or paperweight, featuring a smooth, bald cranium that transitions into four distinct countenances with deeply cast features including furrowed brows, downcast eyes, and a wide laughing mouth. The object is finished with a dark brown chemical patina. The underside is not visible, and no maker’s marks or inscriptions are present on the exterior surfaces.
Diameter: 6.5 cm.
Condition report:
The sculpture is in good condition with a well-preserved dark brown patina. There are minor scattered surface abrasions and small nicks to the finish, most notably on the chin and cheek of the laughing face (photo 2) and across the forehead area (photo 1), where the lighter base metal is visible through the patination.
