Description

A collection of two antique British tools comprising a spirit level and a primitive flattening board. The spirit level is constructed from a dark hardwood body, possibly rosewood, topped with a shaped brass plate. The plate is stamped on the left side with J. RABONE & SONS, BIRMINGHAM, MADE IN ENGLAND and on the right side with WARRANTED, NO 1626, CORRECT. It features two glass spirit vials, one mounted horizontally and one vertically for plumb measurements. The second item is a primitive flattening tool, likely a baker’s board or bannock board, consisting of a circular wooden disc attached to a long hand-forged iron handle. The handle is finished with a circular hanging eye and is secured to the centre of the board with a flattened, pinned boss. The ironwork exhibits a dark, pitted texture from traditional forging.

Diameter: 25.4 cm
Length: 56 cm.

Condition report:

The spirit level shows surface scratches and indentations to the wooden body (photo 1). The brass plate exhibits natural patination and surface oxidation across its length (photo 2). Both glass vials are intact, though the fluid level in the horizontal vial appears low (photo 2). The baker board has a significant radial crack running from the outer edge towards the centre of the wooden disc (photo 1). The forged iron handle shows heavy surface oxidation and pitting consistent with its age and material (photo 1).
