Lot 100:
Description
A brass cloisonne enamel garniture comprising a baluster-form vase and a small circular dish. The set features a dark brown aventurine or goldstone-style background with metallic inclusions, decorated with vibrant polychrome floral motifs. The vase is ornamented with large pink and red peonies held within a blue basket, further accented with flowering cherry blossom branches. The vessel is constructed with a flared neck and a stepped circular foot, finished with gilded brass rims and a turquoise blue counter-enamel to the interior and base. The underside of the vase foot bears three small incised vertical scratches that are not legible as characters or a name. The matching shallow dish depicts a butterfly amongst green foliage and a floral sprig, similarly finished with a turquoise enamel reverse and gilded brass rim.
Height: 18 cm
Diameter: 10 cm.
Condition report:
The vase remains in good overall condition with fine surface pitting and air bubbles visible throughout the enamel (photo 2). There is minor oxidation and wear to the gilding on the rim and foot. The dish shows significant condition issues including a large area of enamel loss to the outer rim exposing the dark metal substrate (photo 1) and further chipping to the enamel on the underside edge (photo 4).
