Lot 108:
Description
A pair of brass prismatic compasses, comprising one British military Mark III liquid-filled marching compass and one smaller pocket compass. The Mark III unit features a brass case with a patinated finish, a hinged lid with a glazed sighting window and vertical hairline, and a brass thumb ring. The base is engraved with the characters T.G. CO. LTD LONDON, a broad arrow pheon symbol, MK III, and the date 1941. The internal dial is graduated in degrees from 0 to 360. The second item is a polished brass pocket compass featuring a hinged lid with an internal vertical sighting wire. It includes a flip-up sighting prism and a black dial with white degree markings. The base is engraved with the characters T. COOK LONDON. Both instruments retain their original sighting components and mechanical hinges.
Condition report:
The Mark III compass shows visible wear and surface scratching to the exterior patinated finish (photo 5). The internal liquid is present and the dial appears intact (photo 4). The T. Cook compass displays minor surface tarnishing and light scratches to the polished brass exterior (photo 6). Both units show small indentations and wear to the brass thumb rings consistent with field use. The mechanical hinges and sighting prisms are functional without visible damage to the glass or wire components (photo 2).
