Lot 50:
Description
A dark blue wool military beret featuring a bi-metal cap badge for the Royal Corps of Signals. The badge, known as Jimmy, depicts the figure of Mercury standing upon a globe, surmounted by a St Edward’s crown. The badge is constructed from white metal and gilt and includes a scroll at the base. The beret is finished with a black leather sweatband and includes a traditional black drawcord at the rear. The interior lining is dark and does not feature any legible maker’s labels or stamps.
Diameter: 25.5 cm.
Condition report:
The wool body exhibits surface lint and minor pilling consistent with age and previous service use. The leather sweatband shows light creasing but remains intact and supple. The bi-metal cap badge shows minor oxidation to the gilt sections, particularly around the crown and base scroll. There is no visible evidence of moth damage, holes, or structural tears. The item has lost its original stiffened shape due to storage.
