Description
A vintage painted wood bookmaker’s clerk box featuring a distinctive yellow and black colour scheme. The front hinged panel is painted in black with the initials B.P.A. The main body of the box is hand-painted in black with Charlie Somers and Doncaster, featuring the initials C and S highlighted in red. The rear panel repeats the Charlie Somers and Doncaster text. The box is constructed from wood with metal corner protectors, hinged lid with internal stay-arms, and metal D-rings for strap attachment. The reverse features a yellow adhesive label printed in red and black reading This new Talbot car is Road Ready TALBOT SERVICE with a stylized T logo. The black interior contains a collection of cardboard betting tickets, including examples printed with 60 and 40.

Condition report:
The wooden casing shows significant wear to the yellow and black paint throughout, with numerous scuffs, scratches, and areas of paint loss, particularly at the edges (photo 2). The metal corner protectors, hinges, and stay-arms exhibit surface oxidation and rust (photo 5). There is a visible crack and wood splintering on the left side panel near the stay-arm attachment point (photo 5). The interior black finish is weathered with extensive white spotting and general grime (photo 4). The carrying strap is missing from the D-rings.
