Lot 103:
Description
A collection of marine ivory and bone items comprising two large sperm whale teeth and one rectangular bone box. The first sperm whale tooth is decorated with a detailed scrimshaw scene of a three-masted sailing vessel under full sail, featuring the numerals 1840 inscribed above the mast. The second sperm whale tooth depicts a similar three-masted ship, with the base bearing the inscribed text THE CHESAPEAKE. Both teeth exhibit natural curved forms with polished surfaces. The rectangular bone box is constructed from multiple panels and features a curved hinged lid decorated with an East Asian garden scene. This scene depicts four figures in traditional dress amongst willow trees and lotus flowers, bordered by a cross-hatched pattern. The box is fitted with two brass hinges and a central brass clasp, while the interior is lined with a deep maroon velvet fabric. Potential bidders must be aware of international trade regulations, such as CITES, regarding the sale and export of ivory and animal products.
