Description
A vintage metal advertising printing plate, also known as a letterpress block, featuring promotional material for Heinz Tomato Ketchup. The rectangular plate is constructed from an etched or cast metal alloy. The design is presented in reverse for the printing process. The central imagery depicts a fluted Heinz ketchup bottle with a detailed label bearing the text HEINZ’S TOMATO KETCHUP. To the left of the bottle, the brand name HEINZ is set vertically in a stylised serif font, accompanied by four lines of promotional text. The composition is bordered by decorative Art Nouveau-style flourishes at the corners. This type of plate was typically used for newspaper or magazine advertisements during the early-to-mid 20th century.
Condition report:
The item is in used condition. The obverse printing surface exhibits significant oxidation, surface grime, and traces of black printing ink within the recessed areas. There are visible surface scratches and pitting consistent with industrial use and age. The reverse of the plate shows heavy weathering, corrosion, and residue likely from mounting adhesive or a wooden block. The edges show minor nicks and wear.
