Description

An oil on canvas equestrian portrait in the 19th-century British sporting art style, depicting the bay racehorse Persimmon with jockey Jack Watts up. The horse is shown in profile facing right, with the jockey wearing horizontal striped silks. The setting is a broad racecourse landscape, identified by web consensus as Newmarket, featuring additional riders and horses in the distance. The work is housed in a heavy, ornate gilt and wood-effect composite frame featuring decorative scrolling foliate corner and centre mouldings. The verso of the frame bears white printed inventory or stock numbers 703 – G3P – 8X10 and 951228. No signature is visible on the front of the canvas.

Canvas: 8 x 10 inches

Frame: 15.5 x 17.5 inches.

Condition report:

Significant fine craquelure is visible throughout the sky portion of the composition. There is a general accumulation of surface dirt and discolouration to the varnish layer consistent with age. The verso of the canvas shows substantial age-related discolouration, staining, and some creasing. The frame shows minor surface wear and small losses to the gilt finish.
