Lot 215:
Description
This antique cooper’s croze is a specialised woodworking hand plane used in the barrel-making process to cut the groove for the barrel head. The tool is constructed from a dense hardwood, identified as beech, and features a central iron adjustment screw and nut. The base of the stem is reinforced with a metal shoe. The side of the wooden body bears the incised maker’s mark J. BEAUMONT in a serif typeface. A handwritten provenance label on masking tape is adhered to the lower stem, with visible text reading rrel Ma, oze, m THEAKS, BR, identifying the tool as a barrel croze from Theakston’s Brewery. The head contains a slot designed to hold a cutting iron, which is not present.
Dimensions: 25.4 cm x 25.4 cm.
Condition report:
The tool is in an as-found historical condition. The wooden body shows a dark patina and heavy wear consistent with industrial use. Metal components, including the adjustment screw and nut, exhibit surface oxidation and rust. The cutting iron is missing.
